Empoli vs Sampdoria Match Analysis & Prediction
16/01/2023 10:45 pm
Empoli and Sampdoria conclude the round 18 of Serie A fixtures when they meet at the Stadio Carlo Castellani on Monday night, with both sides finding themselves near the bottom of the table.
Only current league leaders Napoli have beaten Empoli in their last five matches, and just one side outside of the top seven have defeated them all season, which was Spezia on the opening day.
Empoli earned a dramatic point in the capital last time out against Lazio, when goals from Francesco Caputo and Razvan Marin in the final five minutes brought them back after going down 2-0.
However, Paolo Zanetti’s side have simply not scored enough goals overall this season, as teenager Tommaso Baldanzi is their top scorer with just three, and only Sampdoria and Cremonese have scored fewer.
The re-signing of Caputo from their next opponents should add the firepower they need though, as he scored 43 league goals in two seasons at the club between 2017 and 2019, and the 35-year-old is already off the mark.
Sampdoria lost to Napoli in Serie A before they were knocked out of the Coppa Italia by Fiorentina in midweek, leaving them fighting on just the league front, and they have a tough challenge to get out of the current predicament ther find themselves in.
Sitting 18th after 17 matches with just nine points represents their worst-ever start to any Serie A season, as well as being the only club still in single digits for goals scored in the division.
A victory at Sassuolo was huge on their return to action at the start of the month, and it showed the benefits of being on their game and aggressive from the start.
Sampdoria found themselves 2-0 ahead after just half an hour, and despite all of Sassuolo’s dominance after that, they could not peg Samp back. Those are the only goals Dejan Stankovic’s side have scored in their last seven games, with the other six unsurprisingly all ending in defeat.
Empoli vs. Sampdoria Head to head
In the previous 32 meetings between these two sides, Empoli have claimed 10 victories while Sampdoria have won 15, and they have drawn in seven. Sampdoria have scored 43 goals and conceded 29 in the process.

Empoli Team News
Empoli will be without the services of Mattia Destro in attack, but the recent signing of Caputo will help fill the void in his absence while he recovers from a calf injury.
Lorenzo Tonelli will not feature here as he continues to nurse a serious knee injury that has kept him out since last season, while Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro is back from a one-game suspension.

Sampdoria Team News
Jeison Murillo’s red card in Sampdoria’s midweek cup exit against Fiorentina will not carry over into the league, so the defender will be available for selection here.
Tomas Rincon will miss out through suspension, while Omar Colley and Abdelhamid Sabiri could come into the side after making returns from respective injuries in the cup.
