Ecuador vs Uruguay Match Analysis & Prediction
13/09/2023 12:00 am
Gameweek two of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers sees Ecuador face Uruguay at Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado on Wednesday.
After a disappointing first game, the hosts will be looking to record their first win in the qualifiers here, while the visitors will be seeking back-to-back victories early on in qualifying.
Ecuador will enter this contest off the back of a 1-0 defeat to Argentina on Friday, where Lionel Messi stepped up once again to pull his nation through with a solitary goal late on in the second half.
That defeat to Argentina brought an end to a three-game winning run for Ecuador, which included a 2-1 victory over Australia, followed by a 1-0 success against Bolivia and most recently, a 3-1 win over Costa Rica back in June.
Meanwhile, Uruguay will come into this game with great confidence, having got their qualification campaign off to the perfect start with a 3-1 victory over Chile in their opening match on Saturday.
Nicolas de la Cruz opened the scoring and double his tally in the second half, while Federico Valverde also got on the scoresheet to set Uruguay in second place, behind Brazil early in the competition.
Following that victory, Marcelo Bielsa’s side are now on a four-game winning run and unbeaten in their last six across all competitions, while they have also scored two or more goals in five of those games.
Ecuador vs. Uruguay Head to head
In the 15 previous meetings between these two teams, Ecuador have claimed three victories while Uruguay have won eight, and they have drawn in four. Uruguay have scored 23 goals and conceded 13 in the process.

Ecuador Team News
Ecuador’s Kevin Rodriguez looked pretty sharp after coming off the bench in the last match, and will hope to partner Enner Valencia in attack here,
Sanchez may consider switching to a more conventional 4-4-2 formation here, which could allow Pervis Estupinan to play a more advanced role down the left flank.

Uruguay Team News
Bielsa may be tempted to maintain the same starting XI from last time out, which included the very impressive trio of Valverde and De la Cruz on either side of Manuel Ugarte in the Uruguay midfield.
Facundo Pellistri was withdrawn in the last match for Brian Rodriguez, and the Club America attacking midfielder will be hoping for a starting XI berth this time behind Darwin Nunez and Maximiliano Araujo.
