Deportivo Toluca and the Colorado Rapids will be looking to make it past the Leagues Cup last 16 when they meet at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Wednesday.
Having trailed heading into second-half stoppage time, Toluca snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in their penalty-shootout win over the Houston Dynamo at the Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday.
Picking up where they left off in the group stages – with six points from a possible six following victories over Chicago Fire and Sporting Kansas City – Renato Paiva’s side have now won three matches in a row against MLS opponents.
The victory last time out was also a seventh straight game across all competitions this season without defeat for Toluca, who will rely on their attacking momentum to get them over the linee in Wednesday’s knockout tie having scored the joint-most Leagues Cup goals (seven) so far.
Toluca will now be looking to avoid suffering the same fate as they did in last season’s appearance at this competition, which ended in a narrow round-of-16 exit at the hands of Minnesota United.
Meanwhile, Colorado Rapids showed great resolve to recover from an early setback and overcome Liga MX side Juarez through a 3-2 victory in Saturday’s five-goal thriller at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
Chris Armas’ side, who kicked off their Leagues Cup campaign with a 4-0 defeat to the Portland Timbers, have since got themselves back on track heading into their last-16 tie.
The Pids suffered a disappointing group-stage exit in their maiden appearance at this competition last time out, where they came away empty-handed from both of their two matches.
