Corinthians and Gremio will both be looking to secure maximum points when they meet in the first leg of their Copa do Brasil tie at the Neo Quimica Arena on Thursday.
O Timao secured a 2-1 victory over America RN on May 23 to secure an overall 4-2 aggregate win and book their spot in the last 16 of this year’s Copa do Brasil.
That was the second of three straight wins for Corinthians, but they have flattered to deceive ever since, winning just three of the subsequent 14 matches across all competitions.
Ramon Diaz’s side suffered late heartbreak in their most recent league match; a 2-1 defeat to Atletico Mineiro on Sunday which left them 15th in the Brasileiro Serie A table just past the midway points of the season.
Meanwhile, Gremio were held to a goalless draw in the opening lrg of their Copa do Brasil tie against lower league side Operario before going on to secure a routine 3-1 victory in the second leg on July 14.
That halted a run of three matches without a win for Gremio, who have since picked up seven points from four matches to sit 16th in the top flight.
Despite managing just one goal in their last match, where they narrowly beat Vasco da Gama, Renato Portaluppi’s side recorded a season-high 22 shots and could have easily secured a bigger win on another day.
