Cheltenham Town and Chelsea U21 will face off in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday, with a spot in the quarter-finals of the Souther Section on offer for both sides.
The hosts beat Forest Green Rovers in the last round to progress, while Chelsea advanced to the round of 16 through their 4-2 victory over Peterborough United.
Cheltenham finished second in Southern Section Group C, picking up six points from their three matches, to progress to the last-32 round of the competition, where they defeated Forest Green Rovers on penalties.
Now standing between the League One side and a place in the quarter-finals of the Southern Section are Chelsea U21, and the Robins will enter this contest having won three of their last four matches across all competitions.
However, Cheltenham did suffer a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Forest Green Rovers in the league on Saturday, which has left them in 17th place in the table, boasting 25 points from their 20 games.
Wade Elliott’s side have already been knocked out of the FA Cup this season, suffering a surprise 2-1 defeat to Alvechurch last month, so the EFL Trophy has taken on added importance this season.
Nevertheless, League One will continue to take priority for the club, and head coach Elliott will certainly have more than one eye on the key league encounter with Lincoln City next Saturday.
Meanwhile, Chelsea U21 are likely to be missing some important players for this game, with many of the youngsters involved in the first-team’s mid-season trip to Abu Dhabi.
Consequently, the Blues will be far from full strength, but the youthful side will still fancy their chances of causing plenty of problems for their League One opponents.
Mark Robinson’s side finished top of Southern Section Group G with six points to their name to secure a place in the round of 32, where they beat Peterborough 4-2 to progress to this round.
Malik Mothersille scored twice for Chelsea U21 against Peterborough, while Cesare Casadei and Ben Elliott were also on the scoresheet during a strong attacking performance.
