11/12/2022 9:45 pm
Chelsea Women will be looking to secure a ninth consecutive victory in the Women’s Super League when they play host to Reading Women at Kingsmeadow on Sunday.
On the other hand, the visitors are unbeaten in their last three matches across all competitions, and they have the chance to claim a third straight victory.
Despite Chelsea having played one game more than their title rivals, they maintained their three-point gap to Arsenal and Manchester United with an impressive 8-0 victory over Leicester City WFC last weekend.
Guro Reiten scored a goal and provided four assists in that game, and she was pivotal in Chelsea’s Champions League away encounter with Real Madrid during the week.
After Caroline put the Spanish club on the lead, Reiten earned her side a penalty when she was fouled by Ivana Andres, and although the Norwegian hit the post from the spot, the ball bounced off the woodwork and the head of the goalkeeper to ensure that the Blues salvaged a point.
While the Blues are top of their Champions League group and on the verge of progressing to the knockout stages, they will now turn their attention back to league matters.
Emma Hayes’ side will certainly feel confident with themselves after winning all six of their competitive home matches this season. scoring 21 goals and conceding on just two occasions.
Reading may be occupying 10th place ahead of kickoff, but they have enjoyed a positive run of results in recent weeks, beginning with a 3-3 draw with Liverpool, where Sanne Troelsgaard scored an 89th-minute equaliser.
They followed that result with a 3-0 victory over Southampton in the League Cup, before they faced Tottenham Hotspur in the WSL last weekend.
A first-half own goal from Amy Turner proved enough to help Reading claim a narrow 1-0 victory, which also represented just their second victory of the WSL campaign.
With bottom-placed Leicester City WFC still searching for their first point of the season, Reading are currently seven points clear of the one and only relegation spot.
Despite going unbeaten in three matches, the Royals have lost all four of their away league games this season, and they will be aware that they face a difficult test when they go up against the current English champions.
