Chelsea vs Manchester City Match Analysis & Prediction
05/01/2023 11:00 pm
The second of three quickfire encounters between Chelsea and Manchester City sees the Blues welcome the Citizens to Stamford Bridge for Thursday’s Premier League contest.
While Graham Potter’s side salvaged a point in a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest last time out, the visitors were held to their own stalemate by Everton.
Seven points separate Chelsea from a spot in the top four, but seventh-placed Brentford are just one point clear of their near neighbours having played two games more, and the January arrivals could soon arrive en masse for the Blues.
With Andrey Santos and David Datro Fofana earmarked as talents of the future, Benoit Badiashile ought to hit the ground running as Chelsea’s latest in a long line of defensive acquisitions. Progress is also believed to have been made in their efforts to bring Benfica and Argentina star Enzo Fernandez to the English capital.
Opposition players scoring goal-of-the-season worthy efforts at the Etihad is nothing new, and Everton’s Demarai Gray put his name in the hat for the personal accolade to further dent Manchester City’s hopes of a third successive Premier League title.
Failure to beat the Toffees saw Man City enter the New Year seven points behind Arsenal in the table, and that gap could increase to double digits should the Gunners defeat Newcastle United on this Tuesday night – and the Magpies could also leapfrog Guardiola’s side into the top two.
Making the trip to West London without a clean sheet from their last four Premier League matches, Man City will be encouraged by their record of one away defeat from their 25 most recent in the top flight, and not since 2012 have the champions lost their opening game of the calender year.
Guardiola’s side eliminated Chelsea from the EFL Cup through a 2-0 scoreline in the third round just before the World Cup, and both Premier League meetings between the two teams in the 2021-22 campaign ended in 1-0 wins for Man City.

Chelsea Team News
Chelsea have long-term injury absentees in Armando Broja and N’Golo Kante, who have since been joined by Reece James and his latest knee problem.
Wesley Fofana is unlikely to make the cut here either, but there is optimism over Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who has now returned to training from a calf injury.

Manchester City Team News
Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte are set to miss out for Man City through hamstring and back issued respectively, but the latter’s problem could not keep him out for an extended period of time.
Julian Alvarez returned off the bench against Everton and should be one of the several players in contention for recalls to the starting XI.
