Burnley vs Portsmouth Match Analysis & Prediction
21/09/2024 5:00 pm
Burnley will be looking to secure a second straight victory when they play host to Portsmouth at Turf Moor for Saturday’s Championship contest.
The Clarets are in fourth position with 10 points to their name, while the visitors are languishing in the relegation zone after picking up three points from their five matches.
Burnley made a fast start to their bid to secure an immediate return to the Premier League, posting dominant wins over Luton Town and Cardiff City in their first two league matches of the season.
However, the Clarets’ early momentum was halted by a 1-0 defeat to Sunderland and a 1-1 draw against rivals Blackburn Rovers.
After picking up one point from two matches, Scott Parker’s side secured a positive response in their recent home game against Leeds United, with Luca Koleosho scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory at Elland Road.
As a result, Burnley will head into the weekend as the Championship’s third-highest scorers while also boasting the joint second-best defensive record after conceding just three league goals this season.
Meanwhile, after securing the League One title last season, Portsmouth have experienced a difficult start to their first Championship campaign since 2011-12.
John Mousinho’s side are one of three teams still waiting for their first league victory of the season after drawing three and losing two of their opening five Championship matches.
Pompey kicked off the campaign with three successive league draws against Leeds United, Luton Town and Middlesbrough, before they suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Sunderland.
They experienced another difficult home game in Sunday’s encounter with high-flying West Bromwich Albion, suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to leave them in 23rd position and with the joint-worst defensive record in the Championship.
