Bristol City vs Wigan Athletic Match Analysis & Prediction

15/02/2023 10:45 pm

Bristol City will be looking to extend their 2023 unbeaten run when they play host to Wigan Athletic in the Championship on Wednesday night.
While the hosts currently sit seven points adrift of the playoff spots, their visitors remain in the relegation zone despite a rare victory at the weekend.
Having failed to take Bristol City forward for much of his two-year reign, Nigel Pearson may have been getting frustrated with his work at the club.
However, it has been a different story since the turn of the year, Bristol City putting together a nine-game unbeaten run across all competitions.
Although they will be pleased about a showdown with Manchester City in the FA Cup fifth round, it is the Robins’ league form that is more important, and they will now feel that a bid for the playoffs is increasingly possible.
Bristol City have collected 12 points from a possible 18, while they have recorded back-to-back wins for the first time since the start of September with victories over Preston North End and Norwich City.
While Pearson’s side remain in 13th place, chasing down the seven-point gap to the top six is now deemed achievable, especially ahead of a game against a relegation-threatened opponents.
That said, the argument will be that Bristol City are facing Wigan Athletic at the wrong time, with Shaun Maloney collecting four points from his first two matches in charge.
Off the back of a goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers, Wigan delivered in their game against Huddersfield Town to post a 1-0 victory.
Despite their previous eight-game winless run, only goal difference keeps Wigan in the relegation zone at this point, and there is growing optimism as the DW Stadium.
However, Wigan are without an away win in the Championship since October 1, a period that involves nine matches.
Bristol City vs. Wigan Athletic Head to head
In the 17 previous meetings between these two teams across two competitions, Bristol City have claimed six victories while Wigan have won four, and they have drawn in seven. Wigan have scored 16 goals and conceded 22 in the process.
