Bristol City vs Manchester City Match Analysis & Prediction

28/02/2023 11:00 pm

Bristol City will hope to pull off another FA Cup giant-killing when Premier League champions Manchester City visit Ashton Gate for Tuesday’s fifth-round tie. The Robins put three past West Bromwich Albion without reply to advance to round five, while Pep Guardiola’s crop ended Arsenal’s hopes of a record-extending 15th crown.
Bristol City has gone through the FA Cup and Championship without defeat as the weather has warmed since December.
The Robins beat Swansea City 2-0 in a replay before ending West Bromwich Albion’s unbeaten run in round four, with Sam Bell scoring twice and Alex Scott netting once.
Bristol City hasn’t reached the quarter-finals since 1974, losing to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sheffield United in 2019 and 2021, respectively.
Superstitious Man City supporters may not be too sad with defeat here. The last team to lose an FA Cup fifth-round tie against Bristol City–Leeds United in 1973-74–went on to be crowned top-flight champions.
Even though Man City is still playing catch-up to Arsenal in the Premier League, omens won’t influence Guardiola’s thinking for Tuesday’s cup match, which the Citizens progressed to thanks to Nathan Ake’s goal against Arsenal in round four.

Manchester City Team News
Guardiola will likely welcome Aymeric Laporte back from illness for the fifth-round clash, but John Stones’s thigh injury is unlikely to heal in time. The infamous ‘Pep roulette’ should come into play as he rotates his resources, with Stefan Ortega, Kalvin Phillips, and potentially even Maximo Perrone forcing their way in.
