Bolton Wanderers vs Portsmouth Match Analysis & Prediction
14/01/2023 6:00 pm
Four days after Bolton Wanderers knocked out Portsmouth out of the EFL Trophy, the two sides will resume hostilities when they meet in League One on Saturday.
While the hosts currently sit in the playoff spots, Portsmouth are 10 points worse off than their opponents, although they have played three matches fewer than the Trotters.
Bolton extended their unbeaten run to seven matches across all competitions with a narrow 1-0 victory over Portsmouth in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday.
The hosts will be looking to replicate that result on Saturday as they look to cement their spot in the playoff places, with Bolton currently sitting in fifth position.
Ian Evatt’s side are currently three points better off than Wycombe Wanderers, who sit just outside the playoffs in seventh place.
Bolton boast the best defensive home record in the league, and they have kept a clean sheet in each of their last five competitive matches at the University of Bolton Stadium.
Portsmouth are currently without a permanent manager after Danny Cowley was sacked following the club’s most recent league game, which resulted in a 3-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic.
Since that result, interim manager Simon Bassey has overseen consecutive 1-0 defeats, firstly to Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup, before they were beaten by Bolton on Tuesday.
While Portsmouth have now lost their last three matches across all competitions, they are also winless in nine league games since beating Forest Green Rovers on October 22.
As a result of their poor form, Portsmouth have dropped down to 13th place in the league standings, with nine points separating them from the playoff spots.
Bolton Wanderers vs. Portsmouth Head to head
In the previous 78 meetings between these two teams across all competitions, Bolton have claimed 33 victories while Portsmouth have won 26, and they have drawn in 19. Portsmouth have scored 96 goals and conceded 120 in the process.
