Bolton Wanderers vs Manchester United U21 Match Analysis & Prediction
13/12/2022 10:45 pm
Manchester United U21 will be looking to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Northern Section of the EFL Trophy when they take on Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday.
While the hosts claimed a 3-2 victory over Barrow to progress to this stage of the competition, the visitors beat Wolverhampton Wanderers U21 on penalties in the last round to progress.
Bolton suffered a humiliating defeat to Shrewsbury Town in League One on Saturday, conceding twice in the final 11 minutes of the game in Shropshire to lose 3-2.
The Trotters led 2-1 until the 79th minute of the contest, when Christian Saydee equalised and Chey Dunkley then scored the winner for the hosts in the 92nd minute.
That defeat has left Bolton in fifth place in the table, boasting 32 points from their 20 games, as they look to challenge for a return to the Championshp this season.
Ian Evatt’s side finished top of Group B in Northern Section, picking up seven points in the process to progress to the next round, where they claimed a 3-2 victory over Barrow to progress to the quarter-finals.
Bolton were knocked out of the FA Cup by Barnsley at the start of November, so this competition has taken on added importance, although the league remains the priority competition for the club.
Meanwhile, Manchester United U21 overcame Wolverhampton Wanderers U21 on penalties in the last round of the competition following a goalless draw to progress to this stage.
Marc Jurado, Charlie McNeill, Manni Norkett and Kobbie Mainoo all scored during the shootout to send the Red Devils into the knockout round of the competition.
A number of players have been away in Spain with the first team for their mid-season training camp, which included friendlies against Cadiz and Real Betis.
However, there is no reason apart from injury why the players should not manage to feature in this game, so Mark Dempsey’s side are likely to arrive with a strong squad on Tuesday.
Manchester United U21 finished top of Group G of the Northern Section ahead of Barrow, with the team picking up seven points to progress to the round of 32.
