Boca Juniors vs Cruzeiro Match Analysis & Prediction
16/08/2024 3:30 am
Boca Juniors and Cruzeiro return to action in the Copa Sudamericana when they meet at Estadio Alberto Jose Armando in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie on Friday.
Boca Juniors had to dig deep in the Copa Sudamericana knockout-stage playoffs as they secured a 1-0 aggregate victory over Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle in July.
Having played out a goalless draw at the Complejo Independiente del Valle on July 18, veteran striker Edinson Cavani came up trumps in the second leg as his 39th-minute striker helped his side secure a 1-0 victory on home soil and win the tie on aggregate.
This followed a solid run in the group stages, where Diego Martinez’s side secured three wins and two draws from their six matches to collect 11 points and finish second in Group D, two points behind first-placed Fortaleza.
Boca Juniors head into Friday’s contest fresh off the back of a 1-1 draw with Independiente Rivadavia in the Argentine Primera Division on Sunday, when Cristian Medina scored in the 95th minute to cancel out Ivan Vallalba’s 77th-minute opener.
Meanwhile, Cruzeiro failed to return to winning ways in the Brasileiro Serie A as they played out a goalless draw with Atletico Mineiro when the sides met on Sunday.
Fernando Seabra’s side, who are currently sixth in the Serie A standings, not turn their attention to the Copa Sudamericana, where they cruised through the group stages, picking up 12 points from a possible 18 to finish as Group H winners.
Cruzeiro secured three wins and three draws from their six matches to finish as one of just three unbeaten sides in the group stages – alongside Belgrano and Cuiaba – while scoring eight goals and keeping five clean sheets.
Boca Juniors vs. Cruzeiro Head to head
In the previous nine meetings between these two teams, Boca Juniors have claimed five victories while Cruzeiro have won three, and they have drawn once. Cruzeiro have scored eight goals and conceded 10 in the process.
