Both Benfica and Portimonense will be bidding to return to winning ways when they square off at the Estadio da Luz in their opening Primeira Liga fixture of 2023 on Friday night.
Benfica have made an impressive campaign in the Primeira Liga this season with the side claiming 37 points from 14 games to sit at the summit of the league, five points above their close rivals and champions Porto.
After going unbeaten in the league before the World Cup break, Benfica returned to the league action with a reality check as they suffered a 3-0 loss at Braga last time out. They will be keen to bounce back on Friday and get their 2023 off a winning start.
Roger Schmidt’s side have only lost to Portimonense in one of their last seven league games, picking up five wins in the run. They should therefore be confident against this opponent and will in for a routine win.
Portimonense suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Casa Pia last time out, making it their second consecutive league loss and have only won one of their last five top flight games.
The run has seen them drop to eighth in the standings with now seven points outside the European spots, while they are just now two points above 12th-placed Boavista. Another setback on Friday could leave them as low as 12th something they will keen to avoid, but they face the league leaders who are just in need of points as Paulo Sergio’s men.
