Bayer Leverkusen vs Mainz 05 Match Analysis & Prediction

19/02/2023 9:30 pm

Bayer Leverkusen and Mainz 05 head into Sunday’s meeting with plenty of confidence after both teams returned to winning ways in the Bundesliga last weekend.
While the hosts claimed a 3-1 victory away at Hoffenheim, their visitors got the better of Augsburg by the same scoreline.
After losing each of their previous two matches to fall back into the bottom half of the table, Xabi Alonso would have been relieved to see his side beat Hoffenheim on the road last time out in the league.
However, Leverkusen suffered a major setback in the Europa League in midweek, as they lost 3-2 at home to Monaco in the first leg of their playoff tie.
Ahead of their trip to the south of France on Thursday, Alonso will be determined to see his side rebuild confidence by securing a second successive league victory against Mainz on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Mainz will benefit from having eight days between fixtures, and as a result they may sense a great opportunity to inflict a minor upset against their more illustrous opponents.
With Hertha Berlin nine points back in the relegation playoff spot ahead of this weekend’s game, Mainz look set to secure their safety for yet another season, having remained in the Bundesliga since their last promotion in 2009.
Die Nullfunfer have also collected an equal share of points at home and on the road during this campaign, further strengthening their chances of claiming a positive result against Leverkusen on Sunday.
Bayer Leverkusen vs. Mainz 05 Head to head
In the 34 previous meetings between these two teams, Leverkusen have claimed 18 victories while Mainz have won 11, and they have drawn in five. Mainz have scored 42 goals and conceded 56 in the process.

Bayer Leverkusen Team News
Leverkusen will remain without Andrey Lunev and Charles Aranguiz due to back and calf injuries respectively, while Moussa Diaby is a doubt after being withdrawn during the second half of the defeat to Monaco on Thursday.
The winger is therefore unlikely to be risked ahead of the second leg later this week, with Amine Adli and Callum Hudson-Odoi representing potential replacements against Mainz.

Mainz 05 Team News
Mainz travel without Delano Burgzorg and Jonathan Burkardt due to ankle and knee issues respectively, while captain Silvan Widmer, Marlon Mustapha and Robin Zentner are all significant injury doubts.
As such, Svensson’s only change may be to reintegrate Dominik Kohr to his starting XI after the midfielder sat his side’s win against Augsburg following a minor injury from their previous game.
