Barnsley vs Portsmouth Match Analysis & Prediction

19/09/2023 9:45 pm

Barnsley will be looking to secure a fifth successive victory across all competitions when they face Portsmouth in Tuesday’s League One match.
Like their hosts, Portsmoth are also in fine form, and they will look to extend their unbeaten league run to 19 games.
After being beaten by Sheffield Wednesday in playoff final last season, Barnsley experienced a change in the managerial dugout over the summer after Michael Duff opted to try fresh challenge with Swansea City.
Duff’s successor Neil Collins got off to a flying start with a dominant 7-0 victory over Port Vale, but one point from the subsequent three league matches left the new manager with work to do.
Since losing to Oxford United on August 19, Barnsley have enjoyed an upturn in fortunes, claiming four straight competitive victories all by a 2-0 scoreline.
In Saturday’s home encounter with Burton Albion, a brace from Devante Cole proved enough to guide the Tykes to all three points, ensuring they finished the weekend in fifth place.
After beating Portsmouth 3-1 at Oakwell in March, Barnsley will be hopeful of replicating a similar scoreline in Tuesday’s home game.
Meanwhile, Portsmouth are in a positive mood after they extended their unbeaten run to 18 league matches in dramatic style.
Their impressive form looked set to come to an end on Saturday when Derby County’s James Collins scored an 86th-minute penalty to put his side ahead, but Colby Bishop proved to Portsmouth’s hero, producing a stoppage-time equaliser to rescue a point.
As a result, Pompey head into the midweek contest in sixth place and level on 13 points with Barnsley after seven matches.
While John Mousinho will be pleased with Portsmouth’s unbeaten run, he may be frustrated with the fact his side have drawn 11 of their previous 18 matches in League One.
Their habit of drawing matches has been particularly prevalent on their travels, with six of their last seven league encounters finishing all square.
Barnsley vs. Portsmouth Head to head
In the 25 previous meetings between these two teams, Barnsley have claimed 10 victories while Portsmouth have won nine, and they have drawn in six. Portsmouth have scored 37 goals and conceded 36 in the process.
