AZ Alkmaar will look to keep the pressure on the Eredivisie leaders when they take on a struggling Excelsior in their Matchday 21 tie on Friday night.
Alkmaar are enjoying an impressive campaign this season, with the side picking 41 points from 20 games to sit second in Eredivisie, two points off Feyenoord at the summit of the table.
Pascal Jansen’s men are coming off back-to-back league draws against Utrecht 5-5 and Volendam 1-1, which have denied them an opportunity to climb top of the table and are now just a point above Ajax in third place.
They will be looking to bounce back on Friday and a win will see them climb to the summit, at least until Feyenoord play. They have already beaten their visitors this year in a Cup fixture, which ended 4-1 on the road and should be confident of doing the same on Friday.
Excelsior have struggled this season and currently sit 14th on 20 points from 20 games, two places and four points above the relegation zone.
They are coming off a 0-0 draw against Waalwijk, extending the winless run to three league matches and have now won just one of their last six games in all competitions. They will want to bounce back but this will be a challenging fixture.
