Australia vs Lebanon Match Analysis & Prediction
21/03/2024 12:10 pm
Australia’s latest 2026 World Cup qualification match will take place this Thursday when they play host to Lebanon at CommBank Stadium, who are the top two teams in Group I.
The visitors are without a victory in their last four matches, while the hosts have not played since the Asian Cup quarter-final.
Australia had thrived in the 2024 Asian Cup group stage with two wins and a draw, scoring six times across those matches, but they crashed out of the competition dramatically despite having a one-goal lead through a Craig Goodwin strike.
The Socceroos conceded a 96th-minute penalty against South Korea and they went on to lose the game in extra time as they played with 10 men due to Aiden O’Neilll being sent off.
However, Graham Arnold’s side are in a strong position in their Wolrd Cup qualification group as they sit top after two dominant victories over Palestine and Bangladesh.
Australia have scored eight times and are yet to concede a goal, with another victory this week having the possibility of putting them in a strong position heading into the second half of the group stage.
Lebanon will be looking to cut down the four-point gap that Australia boasts between them, particularly since they will be playing each other back-to-back in this competition.
A victory for Lebanon would certainly inject plenty of confidence into the team before the reverse match takes place next Tuesday, but they have failed to beat Australia during their previous two encounters.
The Cedars struggled in the Asian Cup earlier this year, being knocked out in the group stage as they only managed to score a single goal across the three matches they played.
However, when it comes to their World Cup qualifying matches, Lebanon has proven themselves as a team that are not easy to beat, drawing both of their games to this point.
Australia vs. Lebanon Head to head
Australia have won each of the two previous matches between these two teams, scoring six goals without conceding.
