Atletico San Luis vs Leon Match Analysis & Prediction

24/11/2023 4:00 am

The Liga MX play-in round begins on Friday, with Atletico San Luis hosting Club Leon at Estadio Alfonso Lastras Ramirez, with the winner progressing into the Apertura quarter-finals.
Atleti lost their final game of the domestic season 2-0 to Santos Laguna but still finished seventh in the table, ahead of Leon on goal difference, with La Fiera coming back to beat Juarez 2-1 in their previous match.
A strong start domestically in 2023-24 eventually enabled San Luis to qualify for this round, as they lost just two of their first nine league matches while picking up six wins.
From matchday 10 until the end of the Apertura season, Gustavo Leal’s side picked up just four points, conceding multiple goals on six occasions.
Five of their seven Apertura victories came on home soil, where Leal’s side scored over half of their goals (18/31) in this portion of the Liga MX campaign in San Luis.
With 23 points and their seventh-placed standing, Atleti experienced their highest points total since returning to Liga MX in 2019, while finishing in their highest Apertura position over that stretch.
Requiring a victory to keep their Apertura title aspirations alive, Leon persevered despite suffering an early setback on matchday 17, winning for just the second time domestically this season after conceding the opening goal.
Throughout this league campaign, Nicolas Larcamon’s side relied on their strong defensive play to get by, conceding a goal or fewer on 13 occasions.
Leon won just one game on the road in the opening phase of this competition (2-0 over Santos Laguna) but were in a winning position three other times as the visitors, dropping seven points when leading in the second half away from home.
They have progressed into the quarter-finals of the Apertura in three of the past four seasons but missed out on the last eight a year ago when they were beaten 1-0 by Cruz Azul, while San Luis ended their hopes of a Clausura title last season with a 3-1 comeback victory in the reclassification round.
Atletico San Luis vs. Leon Head to head
In the 13 previous meetings between these two teams, San Luis have claimed four victories while Leon have won seven, and they have drawn in two. Leon have scored 21 goals and conceded 19 in the process.
