One of the biggest fixtures on the La Liga schedule will take place at the Estadio Civitas Metropolitano on Sunday night, when Atletico Madrid host Barcelona.
Atletico’s 2-0 defeat at Cadiz in La Liga last weekend was confortably their worst result of the season, and it was not exactly ideal preparation for the second leg of their last-16 Champions League tie with Inter, which they won through penalties after a 2-2 aggregate.
Diego Simeone’s side sit fourth in the La Liga standings, just two points ahead of fifth-placed Athletic Bilbao, while they are six behind third-placed Barcelona.
The Red and Whites have the best home record in La Liga this season, picking up 40 points from 14 matches through a record of 13 wins and one draw.
Meanwhile, Barcelona claimed a 3-1 victory over Napoli in the second leg of their last-16 Champions League tie on Tuesday to secure their spot in the quarter-finals with a 4-2 aggregate win.
Xavi’s side are unbeaten in their last nine matches across all competitions, and they secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Mallorca in the league last weekend to stay in the title picture.
Barca are third in the table, one point behind second-placed Girona and 11 from league leaders Real Madrid, who have played a game more after beating Osasuna on Saturday.
The Catalan outfit have the second-best away record in La Liga this season, picking up 27 points from 13 matches, remaining unbeaten in the process.
