Junior vs Botafogo Match Analysis & Prediction

29/05/2024 1:00 am

Neck-toneck in the Copa Libertadores Group D standings, Atletico Junior and Botafogo will be bidding to secure first place in Wednesday’s finale.
Both sides are already guaranteed to progress to the knockout rounds of the competition, but it is the hosts who are currentl on course to qualify in first position.
Still unbeaten in the competition since the 2024 edition commenced, Junior are one of just five teams across the eight groups with zero defeats on their record heading into matchday six, where a point would suffice for a first-placed finish.
Despite only prevailing in two of their five matches so far, a trio of successive 1-1 draws against Universitario (two) and LDU Quito has Junior sitting pretty at the top with nine points on the record.
While their points tally is identicall to that of Botafogo, their superior goal difference means that Arturo Reyes’ side simply have to hold out for another stalemate to progress to the last 16 as group winners, which would also extend their impressive unbeaten Libertadores run to 10 matches across two tournaments.
Botafogo come bouncing into their final Group D match riding high on the back of their 1-0 success on matchday five, overcoming Universitario through a 77th-minute winner from substitute Jeffinho.
The narrow win over Universitario marked a third Libertadores success in a row for Botafogo, who had to come through two qualifying games against Aurora and RB Bragantino to even reach the group stage, which began in humbling fashion with back-to-back defeats.
However, their revival means that they will be playing knockout football in the Libertadores in August, and victory at Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Melendez on Wednesday would send them through as group winners.
