Atletico Goianiense and Vasco da Gama renew acquintances on Thursday when they meet in the first leg of their Copa do Brasil round-of-16 tie at Estadio Antonio Accioly.
Vagner Mancini’s side failed to stop the rot in the Brasileiro Serie A as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to league leaders Flamengo when the sides met on Sunday.
Goianiense have now failed to taste victory in 11 successive matches, losing seven and securing four draws since Luiz Fernando and Mateo Zuleta scored second-half goals to inspire them to a 2-1 victory over Fluminense on June 16.
While Goianiense find themselves rooted to the bottom of the Serie A table, they now turn their attention to the Copa do Brasil, where they began the campaign with a 3-1 victory over Real Brasilia on March 7, before securing 5-2 aggregate win over Serie B side Brusque in May.
Having kicked off their cup campaign with a comfortable 3-1 victory over lower-tier Marcilio Dias on February 28, Vasco da Gama were spared their blushes in the second round as they needed penalties to overcome Serie D outfit Agua Santa.
Faced with their toughest challenge in the third round, Vasco da Gama had to dig deep once again as they secured a penalty-shootout victory over fellow Serie A side Fortaleza after 3-3 aggregate draw.
While Rafael Paiva’s side have shown their mettle in the cup, they have suffered a drop-off in form in the Serie A, where they are on a run of two defeats in their last two matches.
Atletico GO vs. Vasco da Gama Head to head
In the previous 18 meetings between these two teams, Atletico GO have claimed three victories while Vasco have won 11, and they have drawn in four. Vasco have scored 23 goals and conceded 10 in the process.
