Athletic Bilbao vs Girona Match Analysis & Prediction

26/02/2023 4:00 pm

Athletic Bilbao will be looking to return to winning ways in La Liga when they play host to Girona at San Mames Barria on Sunday.
The seventh-placed hosts enter the contest off the back of a 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid, while 11th-placed Girona claimed a 6-2 victory over Almeria last time out.
Athletic have recorded nine wins, five draws and eight losses in their 22 league matches this season to collect 32 points, leaving them seventh in the table, two points behind sixth-placed Rayo Vallecano.
Ernesto Valverde’s side have been victorious in two of their last three league matches, beating Cadiz and Valencia on February 3 and February 11 respectively, but they will enter this game off the back of a 1-0 defeat to Atletico.
The Lions have the fourth-best home record in La Liga this season, picking up 20 points from 11 matches, and they will be hosting a Girona side who have only collected six points on their travels.
Meanwhile, Girona are currently 11 in the table, boasting 27 points from their opening 22 matches of the season, which has left them five points clear of the relegation zone heading into the next set of fixtures.
Michel’s side secured a return to La Liga through last season’s Segunda Division playoffs, and there have been plenty of signs of encouragement this campaign in terms of their battle to avoid the drop.
Girona have actually now won two of their last three matches, having also beaten Valencia at home on February 5, but it has been a struggle for them on their travels, winning just one of their 10 games away from home.
The White and Reds beat Athletic 2-1 in the reverse fixture earlier this season, but the Lions claimed a 1-0 victory when the two teams last met at San Mames in La Liga in December 2018.
Athletic Bilbao vs. Girona Head to head
In the five previous meetings between these two teams, Athletic Bilbao have claimed three victories while Girona have won twice. Girona have scored five goals and conceded six in the process.
