04/01/2023 11:00 pm
Fresh off the back of an impressive victory over Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa return to the West Midlands to face local rivals Wolvehampton Wanderers in Wednesday’s Premier League derby.
While the hosts claimed a 2-0 victory over the Lilywhites in their most recent game, the visitors suffered a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.
The Unai Emery revolution is gathering pace at Villa Park, but the Lions remain outside of the top half for the time being and enter their first home game of the New Year sitting 12th in the standings.
Collecting nine points and scoring eight goals in their first four Premier League matches under Emery has turned some heads, and just three of Villa’s last 10 league home matches have ended in defeat.
After being dropped to the bench for being late to a team meeting, Marcus Rashford’s impact substitution paid dividends for Manchester United against Wolves, as the England international scored the only goal of the game and had a second ruled out for handball not long after.
There was plenty for Julen Lopetegui to be encouraged about at Molineux, but a 10th defeat of season leaves Wolves in an increasingly dangerous position near the foot of the able, currently sitting in 19th place and one point worse off than 17th-placed West Ham United.
Wolves enjoyed back-to-back victories over Aston Villa in the 2021-22 season, claiming a 3-2 win at Villa Park before winning 2-1 at Molineux, and the Lions’ Premier League winless run against the Wanderers at home now stands at six matches.
