As the World Cup begins in Qatar, Italy will look to continue its recent revival against Albania on Wednesday. The teams meet in Tirana as Italy plots a path to defending its crown at Euro 2024 while building on recent Nations League success.
Roberto Mancini has called up Italy for two friendlies to make the most of a difficult situation. The first will occur against Albania on January 23rd, followed by a match against Austria on February 1st.
The squad will convene in Siena on January 21st for a training camp before flying out to Tirana and Vienna.
When they last met, for the conclusion of their Nations League campaign, Italy secured a place in the semi-finals via a 2-0 victory over Hungary in Budapest.
Federico Dimarco and Napoli star Giacomo Raspadori scored for them as they leapfrogged their hosts at the top of League A Group 3.
Italian coach Edy Reja has worked through several Serie A sides before being appointed Albania coach in 2019.
The 77-year-old took the Eagles through qualification for last year’s Euros and the upcoming World Cup finals, but they failed to reach either tournament and are instead looking ahead to Euro 2024.
Still, to make their debut at the global level, Albania won six of their 10 matches in Group I but ultimately finished third behind Qatar 2022 finalists England and Poland.
