Al Ittihad secured their spot in the AFC Champions League quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over Navbahor on Thursday, following a goalless draw in the first leg.
They initially went behind in the 25th minute when Karim Benzema inadvertently put the ball into his own net, but Abderrazak Hamdallah restored parity in stoppage time at the end of first half.
With just three minutes remaining in regular time, the Peaple’s Club received a stroke of luck as Navbahor’s Toma Tabatadze scored an own goal, securing a crucial qualification for Al Ittihad.
Marcelo Gallardo’s side continued their impressive form in the domestic league with a 2-0 victory over Al Riyadh, keeping them in fifth position with 34 points from 20 matches.
They now face a home encounter against Al Wehda, a team they have enjoyed dominance over, winning their last six matches between the two teams.
Al Wehda returned to league action this year, playing out a 1-1 draw with relegation-threatened Al Tai last Friday.
Despite Jawad El Yamiq putting the Knights of Mecca ahead in the 72nd minute, they conceded a late equaliser from Andrei Cordea in the 89th minute.
As a result, Giorgos Donis’ side remain in ninth position in the league standings, six points clear of the relegation zone with 14 matches remaining.
Facing a challenging away game on Monday, Al Wehda will be hoping to halt their three-game away winless run, having conceded five goals without scoring in those matches.
