22/11/2022 10:45 pm
League Two rivals AFC Wimbledon and Sutton United will be vying for a spot in the third round of the EFL Trophy on Tuesday at the Cheery Red Records Stadium in London.
The hosts lost their last group game to Portsmouth on penalties, while the visitors beat Oxford United 2-0 in their final match to finish second behind Chelsea U21.
After missing out on the second round of this competition a season ago, Wimbledon have a shot at redemption on Tuesday, having suffered a 1-0 defeat at Sutton United in the group stage in 2021-22, eliminating them from the event.
Following their relegation from League One last season, the Dons brough in Johnnie Jackson as head coach, a former defender with plenty of experience playing in the lower tiers of English football.
Since November, Wimbledon have shown more structure and orgainisation along the backline, allowing a goal or fewer in their six games played this month.
They have suffered just one defeat at home across all competitions since October, though that defeat did come against Sutton United when they managed to fire just one shot on target in the middle of last month.
Meanwhile, Matt Gray saw his Sutton side end a five-game winless run across all competitions by beating Rochdale 1-0 on Saturday.
Sutton have been poor in front of goal in recent occasions, failing to score in their last three games across all competitions before their narrow victory over the weekend.
Domestically, the Amber and Chocolates have managed to collect just five points so far this season away from home, conceding multiple goals in four matches.
Sutton made it into the final of this competition for the first time in 2021-22, winning three of their four elimination matches on penalties before falling to Rotherham United 4-2 after extra time.
AFC Wimbledon vs. Sutton United Head to head
