Accrington Stanley vs Bolton Wanderers Match Analysis & Prediction

22/02/2023 11:00 pm

Bolton Wanderers make the trip to Wham Stadium to face Accrington Stanley on Wednesday night, with the League One sides meeting in the semi-final of the EFL Trophy.
While the hosts have more modest ambitions this season and will have their sights set on avoiding relegation, the visitors are fourth in the third tier, nine points adrift of the top two.
Accrington have had a difficult campaign up to this point, currently sitting 20th in the League One standings, just one point clear of the relegation zone, although they have played at least one fewer game than most of the teams above them.
A lack of goals is what has stopped John Coleman’s side from challenging higher up the table, given that they have only scored 26 goals in their 30 matches in the third tier, just one more than bottom-placed Forest Green Rovers.
In their last five League One matches, the Reds have scored on two occasions, but one of those came during a crucial victory last time out, in Accrington’s first win in six matches across all competitions.
Accrington claimed a 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town at the Wham Stadium, with Aaron Pressley scoring the only goal of the game early in the first half.
To reach this stage of the competition, Stanley have beaten Lincoln City and Burton Albion, but the upcoming game will likely be their toughest yet, considering they have already lost at home to Bolton this season.
Bolton have won five of their last six league matches – conceding just twice – while they have also racked up some impressive victories, beating Peterborough United and MK Dons 5-0.
Ian Evatt’s side have not had an easy run to the semi-final stage, facing the likes of Manchester United U21 and most recently Portsmouth, who they beat 1-0 at the Toughsheet Stadium through Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s first-hald goal.
However, Bolton did come unstuck in their last away trip, losing 1-0 to fellow promotion-chasers Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, despite dominating the majority of the possession.
Accrington Stanley vs. Bolton Wanderers Head to head
In the seven previous meetings between these two teams across all competitions, they have each claimed three victories while drawing once. Accrington have scored 13 goals and conceded 10 in the process.

Aaron Pressley is set to lead the Accrington Stanley line alongside Shaun Whalley, but the hosts will be without Sean McConville after being forced off in the second half against Shrewsbury.
That would see Mitchell Clark come into the side, but defender Ryan Astley is expected to miss out again, having not been in the squad for the last four matches.
