Third meets fourth in the CONMEBOL FIFA World Cup Qualifiers as Ecuador travels to Estadio Nacional to take on Peru in an important qualifying fixture on Wednesday morning with kickoff at 05:00.
Peru had a difficult start to the World Cup qualifying campaign with team winning in none of their five matches, picking up just one draw while suffering four defeats in the process. However, Ricardo Gareca’s side seems to be on their way to book a place at successive World Cup finals, with the tam kicking their qualification campaign up a notch in recent weeks as they have now won six, drawn one and lost three of their last 10 qualifying matches.
A run of successive three wins in World Cup 2022 Qualifying, Gareca’s side have stormed into the fourth and final qualification spot with 20 points on board to their name from 15 matches, although, Uruguay sit just a point behind them in the playoff spot.
Peru will therefore be looking to use their strong form to stun Ecuador for the three points as they look to maintain their qualifying ambitions. Peru have not lost in their last six matches across all competitions, claiming five wins and a draw in the run and they have been strong at home as they are unbeaten in their last six home matches and boast a three-match winning streak in world Cup qualifying at home without conceding a single goal.
Meanwhile Ecuador have made an impressive qualifying campaign with the team recording seven win, three draws and five defeats from their 15 matches to collect 24 points, which have left them sitting in the third place behind both Argentina and Brazil in the second and first place respectively.
They head into the match in a strong form as they have only lost one of their last eight matches across all competitions claiming four wins and three draws in the process. They have not lost in their last in their last four qualifying matches claiming two wins and two draws in the run and are coming off an impressive 1-1 draw against leaders Brazil.
They sit four points above their Wednesday’s hosts and they will be determined to widen the gap as they look to firmly hold on their qualifying spot.
