Norwich City are set to host Birmingham City at the Carrow Road in an all-Championship affair in the first round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.
Norwich have had a poor start in their new Championship campaign, opening with a 1-0 defeat to Cardiff City before playing out a 1-1draw against a newly-promoted Wigan Athletic in the second match at home on Sunday.
The Canaries underwhelming start to the campaign has shown early indications that returning to the Premier League on the first time of asking will be difficult, and they now sit just above the relegation zon, but Dean Smith’s side have plenty of time to turn around their campaign.
They will be looking to use the EFL Cup tie to bounce back to winning ways and build their confidence. They reached the third round of the competition last season, where they were eliminated by eventual winners Liverpool, but they thrashed Bournemouth 6-0 in the first round and will hope to hit similar heights this season.
Meanwhile, Birmingham have enjoyed a positive start to their Championship campaign despite facing last season’s playoff teams in their opening two matches. They held Luton Town to a 0-0 draw at away on the opening day, before beating Huddersfield 2-1 at home last Saturday.
They will now be looking to keep the unbeaten run going in the EFL Cup as they seek to book a place in the second round, although the Blues have been knocked out at this stage of the competition in three of the last four seasons – a run they will want to turn around this time around.
