Two teams fighting to salvage their seasons go head-to-head as Newcastle United welcome Everton to St James’ Park for Tuesday’s Premier League battle with kickoff at 22:45.
Both sides have endured difficult campaigns this season with Newcastle despite being the richest club in Premier League now, have only managed to claim two wins in their 21 matches, picking nine draws while suffering 10 defeats in the process and are currently 19th with only two points above Burnley who sit at the foot of the table with two games in hand.
However things have started to look different for the Magpies who have seemingly out of nowhere strung together a three-match unbeaten run in the Premier League, including two draws and the crucial 1-0 win over Leeds at away in their previous league outing. The run has seen Eddie Howe’s side move to one point adrift of safety and he will be hoping to maintain the run as they aim at salvaging their campaign.
It was hardly a surprise to see Newcastle splash the cash in January with the club making a real statement with the acquisition of the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier.
Meanwhile Everton had a difficult time under controversial Rafa Benitez with the side recording five wins, four draws and 11 defeats from their 20 matches to collect 19 points which have left them sitting in 16th with just four points above the relegation zone.
However, a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in their last Premier League match saw Rafa loss his job as the defeat meant that Everton had only won one of their previous 14 league matches and it was a third consecutive league defeat following the 1-1 draw against Chelsea.
In his place Frank Lampard was appointed, arriving on the transfer deadline day with two new acquisitions of Donny van de Beek and Dele Alli. The Tuesday’s clash will be the first Premier League match for Everton under Lampard, but it’s the second across all competitions as the new boss led the Toffee into the fourth round of the FA Cup last Saturday.
The new manager bounce was in full effect for the Merseysiders as they emphatically dispatched Brentford with a 4-1 victory booking a place in the next round of the competition. Now back to the Premier league Lampard will be hoping to see a similar performance and results, but they are coming up against a team who have bolstered their squad and are also fighting for survival.
