The Netherlands Women will continue to defend their European Championship title when they take on Portugal Women at Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday.
Both sides are seeking their first win of the Women’s Euro 2022 after the Netherlands drew 1-1 with Sweden in the opening game, while Portugal fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 against Switzerland.
The reigning European champions picked up a point from their opening game against a Sweden side who are ranked by FIFA as the second-best team in the world.
Jonna Andersson gave Sweden the lead with her first-half goal, but Jill Roord found the back of the net after the half time, ensuring that her side avoided defeat in their competition opener.
The Netherlands will now turn their attention to matchday two where they will be looking to claim their first win of the competition against Portugal.
Having won four of their previous six matches, the Netherlands will feel confident of picking up three points on Wednesday.
They will also be seeking to keep their goalscoring run rolling after finding the back of the net in 19 of their previous 20 internationals.
Meanwhile, Portugal put on a great fight to come back from two goals down to collect a point against Switzerland in their opening game.
They got off to a poor start, conceding two goals inside the opening five minutes to leave themselves with a mountain to climb.
However, they fought back after the interval, with Diana Gomes pegging the opponents back before Jessica Silva restored parity in the 65th minute.
Portugal pressed on looking for a winner but eventually had to settle for a valuable point, with the draw seeing them take a five-game unbeaten run into Wednesday’s contest where they will be looking to claim their first win of the competition.
