Netherlands vs Norway Match Analysis and Prediction

Netherlands welcome Norway to Rotterdam on Tuesday to a match they know they should win so as to guarantee the top spot in Group G and an automatic ticket to the 2022 World Cup.

Holland are currently at the top of Group G, two points clear of Norway, who can also finish first or second depending on Turkey’s performance against Montenegro the same night.

Netherlands were on good course to book their spot in next year’s finals after taking a two-goal lead away to Montenegro on Saturday, with Memphis Depay netting a brace, but they collapsed in the late minutes to share points in a 2-2 draw. Louis van Gaal’s side really need to pick a positive result on Tuesday to guarantee them qualification.

The Holland failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup but were runners-up in 2010 before finishing third in 2014; they were also underperformed in the summer’s European Championship, losing to Czech Republic in the round of 16.

They have never lost any match to Norway in all competitions since September 1992, winning four of their last five matches, but they shared points in a 1-1 draw when they met in the reverse match in September.

Norway on the other hand saw their hopes of finishing first or second collapse on Saturday as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Latvia.

The Lions have not qualified for the World Cup finals since France 1998, and they have not been at any European Champinship since 2000, meaning that it would be a surprise advancing to next year’s tournament.

Norway have found it difficult to score on a regular basis in the group, scoring 15 goals in their nine matches, however they have the best defensive record – going into their toughest match of the section – having conceded only six times thus far.

Netherlands news

Van Gaal is expected to stick with a number of the squad that started against Montenegro on Saturday, but there could be a change in the final third of the field. Stefan de Vrij could again feature alongside Virgil van Dijk in defence, with Davy Klaassen, Frenkie de Jong and Wijnaldum in midfield.

Norway news

Head coach Solbakken could decide to retain the same first XI that took to the field against Latvia. Haaland would be absent due to troublesome hip problem, as Alexander Sorloth could start at the centre-forward, with Odegaard, Kristian Thorstvedt and Mohamed Elyounoussi in support.

Prediction and Odds

This could be most fascinating of a match to see how this section plays out with all the makings of a football game. We are expecting this to be a tight game with more possibilities of outcomes, but believe the home team to have ability to secure an important victory.
