Southampton will host Chelsea at the St Mary’s Stadium in their Premier League Matchday five tie on Tuesday night. Southampton are coming off a narrow 1-0 home defeat to Manchester United last time out, with Bruno Fernandes’ lonely goal sealing the deal for the Red Devils. The defeat extended the Saints slow start to the new campaign as they have now lost two, drawn one and won one of their opening four matches, and they currently sit 14th on four points in the league standings. Southampton had a poor campaign last season, finishing just three places above the relegation something they will keen to avoid this season, but they will need to end their inconsistency to manage a mid-table finish. Meanwhile Chelsea were almost thrown back into a top-four tussle by Tottenham and Arsenal last season but they managed to clinch to their third-place finish. This season many pundits have tipped Chelsea to miss out on a top four finish, but the Blues still have capabilities and deep enough squad that could even fight for the title. They start to the new campaign has not been particularly impressive, but they have managed to win two of their opening four matches, while drawing one with Tottenham and losing the other to Leeds. The defeat was a raincheck for the Blues who went down 3-0 at Leeds and they will need to avoid any more scenarios like that if they are going to challenge for the title or the top-four. They however managed to bounce back last time out as they beat Leicester City 2-1 at Stamford Bridge. They won the tie with 10-men, showing a good fighting spirit something Thomas Tuchel will want his side to bring into this fixture. Last time they beat the Saints 6-0 at St Mary’s Stadium and they should be confident of claiming another win on Wednesday.
