Maribor and Sheriff Tiraspol will go head to head at Ljudski vrt in the first leg of their Champions League qualifying round on Wednesday night.
Maribor displayed a dominant and resilient performance in the first round as they strongly dispatched Soligorsk without conceding in either legs, with the first leg ending in a 0-0 draw, but the Slovenian outfits followed that up with dominant 2-0 victory in the second leg.
However, the Violets were totally outplayed by Radomlje (3-0) in the domestic season opener. They will now be looking to make amends for the shocking defeat, although they face a much tough opponents on Wednesday and will need to be at the top of their game.
Meanwhile, Sheriff Tiraspol came through two closely fought encounters in the first round against Zrinjski. However, last season’s Champions League history makers managed to overcome their opponents in the second leg of the fixture with a hard-fought 1-0 victory through an own goal by Igor Savic. But, that was enough for them to set up a meeting with Maribor in the second round.
After impressing in their debut campaign in the Champions League last season, Sheriff will determined for another spell in the competition this season and will come into the Wednesday’s clash knowing what is at stake here.
