Manchester United will welcome Omonia Nicosia to Old Trafford in their fourth round tie of Group E of the Europa League on Thursday night.
The two met in the reverse fixture last week in Cyprus, where Manchester United grabbed a 3-2 win in the five –goal thriller. Omonia opened the scoring before the break, but Erik Ten Hag’s alterations maximally repaid the manager as a brace from Marcus Rashford and a strike from a fellow substitute, Anthony Martial, turned the game around, before Nikolas Panagiotou added another consolation for Omonia.
The result saw Man United move second in the group on six points from three matches, three points behind Real Sociedad at the summit of the group and three points above third-placed Sheriff Tiraspol.
Therefore Manchester United will be hoping to reduce the gap between them and the group leaders as they fight for the top finish. The team that finishes at the top of the group will automatically proceed to the last 16, while second-places sides proceed to a playoff-knockout against dropping Champions League teams.
The Red Devils warmed up for the clash with a 2-1 away win over Everton in the Premier league last weekend, where they also needed to fight from behind. They have now won seven of their last nine fixtures across all competitions and they should be confident of extending the impressive form in this clash.
Meanwhile, the result saw Omonia record their third consecutive defeat in the group and the moment they sit at the bottom of the group with no points. With three matches remaining to go, Omonia need to win all to stand a chance of finishing second.
A defeat on Thursday will mean that the Cyprus outfits are officially eliminated with still two matches to play. Therefore, they will be desperate to pick up their first Europa League win in the group, but they are coming off a 1-0 away defeat to AEL Limassol in their domestic league campaign and thus they have much to work on before the clash.
