Key Premier League Departures So Far This Transfer Window

Many players have departed their Premier League clubs this summer, and this post will discuss the top players among those who have left.

Julian Alvarez (Man City – Atletico Madrid)

Julian Alvarez left Manchester City for Atletico Madrid on a permanent transfer after a hugely successful two-year stay at the Etihad.  The 24-year-old Argentine striker joined Man City from River plate in 2022 and has made 103 appearances in all competitions.

Julian scored 36 goals over his stay and helped City to win six major trophies. He made history with the Manchester club in the 2022/23 campaign as they secured an iconic tremble. Alvarez had this to say about his departure “today I say goodbye to this amazing club, with a lot of emotion. These have been two very special years. During this time, I have grown and learned a lot – both as a player and as a person.”

Conor Gallagher (Chelsea – Atletico Madrid)

Conor Gallagher has completed his transfer move from Chelsea to Atletico Madrid. The English man began his association with the London club at six as he trained with the Academy. He was named Chelsea Academy Player of the Year in the 2018/19 season, which earned him a first loan move to Charlton the following season.

He went out on a second loan spell at Swansea City, helping them to finish in the Championship playoffs. After that he started catching the eyes of Premier League sides with West Brom taking him on loan. He went from West Brom to Crystal Palace on another loan spell, and it’s at Selhurst where he blossomed.

Palace named him Player of the Season for the 2021/22 campaign, where he scored eight goals in all competitions. His performance at Palace earned him his first England cap and secured him a place in Chelsea’s senior squad. Conor played 50 games for the Blues last season and was regularly named captain in the absence of Reece James.

Michael Olise (Crystal Palace – Bayern Munich)

Michael Olise was among the first departures this summer. He completed his permanent move from Crystal Palace to Bayern Munich in early July. Olise Joined Palace in 2022 from Reading and made 90 appearances, scoring 16 times and assisting 25.

The 22-year-old made some memorable moment with Palace, including a spectacular free kick goal against man United that was voted the club’s goal of the season for 2022/23 campaign. He was also voted 2022/23 Players’ Player of the Season at Palace after becoming the first player to record double digits for assists in a single Premier League season. Olise is a devastating loss to Palace and the Premier League but a great addition to Bayern Munich.

Pascal Gross (Brighton – Borussia Dortmund)

Pascal Gross completed his permanent move from Brighton to his childhood club, Borussia Dortmund. The Germany international spend seven seasons at with Brighton, making 261 appearances where he scored 32 goals and assisted 52 more.

He was voted Player of the Season in his debut campaign at Albion, and he left as Brighton’s all-time scorer in the Premier League with 30 goals. Pascal also made 45 Premier League assists, making him the second highest by a German behind former Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil.

Douglas Luiz (Aston Villa – Juventus)

Douglas Luiz completed his transfer move from Aston Villa to Juventus back in June. The Brazilian joined Villa in 2019 and went on to spend five seasons at the club making over 150 appearances. Douglas helped Villa qualify for UEFA Europa Conference League and Champions League in two consecutive seasons.

He was voted the club’s Player’s Player and Suppoters’ Player of the Season in the 2022/2023 campaign. Luiz is a big loss for both Aston Villa and the Premier League.

Thiago Silva(Released by Chelsea)

Thiago Silva left Chelsea after the end of his contract back in May. The Brazilian veteran joined Chelsea back in 2020 and made 151 appearances, winning the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup.

Thiago expressed his love for the London club, saying, “‘it is already hard saying goodbye in the most normal of circumstances but when there is a mutual love, it’s even harder. But once a Blue, always a Blue.

“Goodbyes are for those that leave and don’t come back. I intend on coming back one day…”

Thiago Alcantara (Released from Liverpool)

Thiago Alcantara left Liverpool after the expiration of his contract in May. The talented midfielder spent four seasons at Liverpool, making 98 appearances and scoring six goals.  The Spaniard won the FA Cup and the Community Shield with the Merseyside club.

Although many injuries and fitness issues disrupted his time at Liverpool, Thiago’s departure still greatly impacted the squad’s depth and technicality.

Raphael Varane (Man United – Como)

Raphael Varane left Manchester United upon the expiration of his contract.  He signed for the Italian Serie A club, Como. Varane arrived at United from Real Madrid in the summer 2021 and made a total of 93 appearances.

The much-decorated defender has scored twice for the Red Devils and helped them win the 2023 Carabao Cup.

Joel Matip

Joel Matip bid farewell to Liverpool FC back in May after the expiration of the contract. Matip spent eight years at the Merseyside club after joining in 2015 from Schalke 04.

Over his spell at Liverpool, the 32-year-old defender made 201 appearances, scoring 11 goals and won seven medals, including the Champions League and Premier League.

Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial said his final goodbyes to Manchester United at the end of last season upon the expiry of his contract. Martial signed for the Reds back in 2015 from the French club Monaco. Even though his time at United was disrupted regularly by injuries, the Frenchman made 317 appearances and scored 90 goals.

He earned several medals at United including, two FA Cups, two Carabao Cups and one Europa League. He was also voted the club’s Players’ Player of the Year in the 2019/20 campaign, scoring 23 goals.

Said Benrahma (West Ham – Lyon)

Said Benrahma left West Ham on a permanent transfer for French club Olympique Lyon. The Algerian International initially joined Lyon on a loan move in January, and the Ligue 1 side decided to make the move permanent this summer.

The 28-year-old signed for West Ham from Brentford in 2020 and made 155 appearances, scoring 24 times and assisting 20 more. He helped the club become the first English team to win the Europa Conference League in the 2022/23 campaign.
