Ivory Coast will be looking to seal a place in the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations when they lock horns with Sierra Leone at the Stade Omnisport de Douala in their second Group E fixture on Sunday evening with kickoff at 19:00.
Ivory Coast opened their AFCON 2021 campaign on a victorious note as Patrice Beaumelle’s side edged out the Nzalang Nacional of Equatorial Guinea in a narrow 1-0 victory on Wednesday, with Max Gradel giving the Ivoirians the three points with a fifth-minute goal.
The Elephants are now at the top of the group with two points clear of both Sierra Leone and Algeria. With the side facing the reigning champions Algeria in their final group match on Thursday, the Elephants will be hoping to avoid dropping points in this match and will fancy their chances having not lost to their Sunday’s opponents in their last four encounters.
Meanwhile Sierra Leone defied all expectations on their opening day as they held the reigning champions Algeria to a 0-0 draw at Douala last Tuesday. The draw was a massive boost to their chances of advancing into the knockout stages, but there still work to be done as they meet a strong Ivory Coast side on Sunday, before wrapping thing up against a formidable Equatorial Guinea side.
They will be hoping for a similar performance and result on Sunday to stand any more chances of advancing.
