FIFA world cup qualifiers resumed this week and head into the weekend with Israel hosting Austria on Saturday 4th in the fifth round or the world cup qualifiers in group F. Austria continue their pursuit of a place at Qatar 2022, in the second match of their World Cup qualifying triple-header against Israel.
Locked together on seven points apiece in the Group F table, the pair are direct rivals for a probable playoff place. Israel lost 2-0 to Denmark in their first qualifier game before drawing 1-1 against Scotland to pick up their first point. They got their first win against Moldova back in March.
Israel then defeated the Faroe Island on Wednesday to make it back-to-back wins in their group bringing them five points behind first-placed Denmark. Israel come to this encounter looking to make their first World Cup appearance since 1970.
However, things are to get tougher for Willi Ruttensteiner’s squad in the coming days, as they now return to base for a challenging game with the Austrians in Haifa and will then head for Denmark next Tuesday.
Austria, just like their hosts, have also managed seven points in this group both being the group’s second placed but will come to this match to make a difference. Austria returned with a win on Wednesday as they defeated Moldova 2-0.
Austria haven’t qualified for the last five editions of the World Cup and are looking to make a change this time round. Following that Austria finished second in Group C at the Euros holding Italy all the way in the last 16, before ultimately losing 2-1 in extra time, Franco Foda is determined to lead his team all the way to the Middle East.
