Wigan will look to seal their promotion to the second tier when they visit Portman Road to take on Ipswich Town in their League One Matchday 43 tie on Tuesday night with kickoff at 21:45.
Ipswich Town have made an inconsistent campaign in League One this season and they continued that last time out as they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to direct-promotion chasers Rotherham last weekend at away. They have now failed to win in their last three consecutive league matches while have won just one of their last six League One matches, recording three draws and suffering two defeats in the process.
The run has seen them drop into the 10th spot in the league standing with 65 points from 43 matches, and their last weekend’s defeat meant that it is now mathematically impossible to clinch a playoff a spot this season as they are now 11 points outside the top six with just three matches remaining to go.
Therefore they have nothing to fight for in this match, but Kieran McKenna will want his side to finish the season in the top-half of the table and as strongly as possible.
Meanwhile, Wigan have made a strong campaign this season and are in contention for a direct promotion to the second tier as they sit at the top of League One with 87 points from their 42 matches, four points above both Rotherham and MK Dons.
Leam Richardson’s side would have by now sealed their promotion but have suffered a dip in their form recently as they have failed to win in their last two league matches, which have allowed Rotherham and the Dons to catch-up.
However, with a game in hand over the third-placed MK Dons give them an advantage of securing a top-two finish over the Dons, although they still cannot afford any more slips as that could be costly. A win here will be increase their chances of a Championship return and if MK Dons loose again this weekend Wigan will surely seal their promotion with a win.
