AFC Champions League Qualification hopefuls Shanghai Port continue their bid to secure a spot in next season’s tournament, when they make a trip to the Jinzhou Stadium to face Guangzhou FC, who find themselves in the relegation zone.

The hosts will be looking to get back to winning ways following their three-game losing run in the Chinese Super League this season, while Shanghai Port aim to make it back-to-back league wins.

Guangzhou FC saw their last league match end in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Wuhan Yangtze at Jinzhou Stadium on Monday, making it their third defeat on the bounce.

Asmir Kajevic opened the scoring for the hosts in the 18th minute before Yang Liyu restored parity in the 59th minute. However, Felico Brown Forbes’ 78th-minute strike ensured that Guangzhou came away empty-handed.

As a result, Liu Zhiyu’s side are currently sitting in the drop zone in 16th place with just three points under their belt through eight matches.

The South China Tigers will be out looking for their first league win in fixtures between them and Shanghai Port since November 2019.

Shanghai Port managed to defeat Hebei FC 2-1 at home in their last Super League match to extend their unbeaten run to three matches – with two wins and one draw- leaving them in seventh place on 13 points.

In the contest at Puwan Stadium, Lu Wenjun put Shanghai Port on the lead in the 24th minute before Zhang Wei found the equaliser in the 58th minute, but Liu Zhurun restored the lead through his 77th-minute strike to ensure the hosts came away with all three points.

They have scored nine goals and conceded eight through eight matches, leaving them trailing third-placed Henan Songshan Longmen by four points for a spot in the AFC Champions League Qualification.
