Gillingham vs AFC Wimbledon Match Analysis and Prediction

Two teams in the basement of the League One standing will have a clash at the Priestfield Stadium on Tuesday, as Gillingham host AFC Wimbledon.

The hosts enter the fixture of the back of a 2-0 defeat at the weekend, while AFC Wimbledon’s winless run extended with a 4-0 loss away to Bolton Wanderers.

After opening the 2021-22 season with a meager tally of three wins from their 28 games, claiming 1-0 victories against Crewe Alexandra and Cambridge United was a welcome treat for Neil Harris’ side in the early stages of February.

Gillingham have since lost 2-0 to Plymouth Argyle at the Priestfield Stadium on Saturday, with Jordon Garrick’s goal and Luke Jephcott’s penalty securing the three points for the visitors.

Harris’ side are now in the relegation battle as they sit 22nd in the table, five points adrift of the safety of 20th place.

Gillingham are running out of time to salvage their third-tier status, and tallies of 12 goals scored and 30 conceded represent the worst home record in the division all season long.

Meanwhile, Wimbledon have a dreadful winless run of their own to try to end, with Mark Robinson’s side still searching for a first victory since the turn of the year.

Wimbledon have now gone 14 matches without a win across all competitions after a disappointing 4-0 defeat against Bolton at the weekend, as Dion Charles, Amadou Bakayoko, Oladipo Afolayan and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson all getting on the scoresheet.

Mark Robinson’s side are slowly slipping closer to danger and are now just one point clear of the relegation in 20th place.

However, Wimbledon may take some positives from their recent record against Gillingham, as they have lost in just two of their last 11 League One meetings and drew 1-1 with the Gills earlier in the season.

Gillingham news

Gillingham are without long-term absentees Alex MacDonald and Danny Lloyd due to knee injuries, while Daniel Adshead has returned to Norwich City with a foot fracture.

Mustapha Carayol and Gerald Sithole remain sidelined, while Ben Reeves returned to action off-bench at the weekend and could replace Ben Thompson in the midfield.

AFC Wimbledon news

Ayoub Assal will serve the second game of a two-match ban here, but Luke McCormick will return from his own suspension to take his place in midfield.

Jack Rudoni and Anthony Hartigan remain sidelined, alongside Aaron Pressley, Alex Woodyard and Henry Lawrence, with all the three nursing their hamstring issues.

Prediction and Odds

Wimbledon enter the fixture with a number of absent players and a depleted morale after a heavy defeat against Bolton, which may deny them a chance of a victory.

Given Gillingham’s home advantage and their recent two victories at home, we see the game ending in a home victory or a draw.
