Genoa and Cagliari face each other in Serie A action on Sunday knowing that the fixture at Stadio Luigi Ferraris is arguably the most important of both their campaigns.
With five matches still to play, 18th-placed Genoa trail Cagliari by six points and realistically need maximum points given their previous efforts this season, while the visitors sit just above the relegation.
Genoa’s great escape was very much on under recently-appointed boss Alexander Blessin, when they went eight matches without suffering a defeat soon after the turn of the year.
However, that momentum seemingly slipped away during the international break, with Genoa having since lost to Verona, Lazio and AC milan.
Although that level of opponent should be noted, it does not change the fact that Blessin’s side, a team with just two league wins in 33 matches, are now on the brink of a drop.
On the positive, II Grifone are set to square off against the teams directly above them in their next two fixtures, which means that back-to-back victories would dramatically change the course of the battle for survival.
On the other hand, a recent five-game losing streak has kept Cagliari very much in the mix for relegation, and they are still contenders to drop down to Serie B.
However, last week’s 1-0 victory over Sassuolo was significant in the grand scheme of things, with the only goal of the game coming from Alessandro Deiola just before half time.
Walter Mazzarri will certainly not get that much convinced with the change in fortunes, but he will recognise that the result has upped the stakes for their hosts ahead of this fixture.
This would be the first of three matches that Cagliari still have to play against teams in the relegation zone, and it highlights that they can ill-afford any slip-ups.
