On Tuesday, Sheffield Wednesday and Fleetwood Town, who are currently battling at either end of the League One table, will play an important game against one another at Highbury Stadium with kickoff at 9:45 pm.
Although they were beaten at the weekend by relegation-threatened Wycombe Wanderers, Sheffield Wednesday is still well placed to challenge for a top-six finish in League One that would earn them a shot at the playoffs.
The Owls dropped to the seventh spot in the table, one point behind Wycombe after their opponents in the standings leapfrogged them, but they can now go back above Wycombe by beating Fleetwood Town.
Seeking promotion back to the Championship at the first attempt, Wednesday has everything to play for as they look to move up the table.
Since a 1-0 victory over the Cod Army back in August, the South Yorkshire side has had trouble navigating English football’s third tier. Yet, winning 10 of their last 12 home games has kept them in the hunt for promotion.
After losing to Accrington Stanley and Oxford United at home, Fleetwood was desperate to get a win against AFC Wimbledon at Highbury Stadium on Saturday. Joe Garner’s free kick in the 89th minute saved the team from relegation, and the home fans greeted this result with cheers.
