Fiorentina will be seeking to pick up where they left last at the end of 2021 when they resume Serie A action by hosting Udinese.
The hosts played out a 1-1 draw with Hellas Verona before the winter break, while the visitors’ clash with Salernitana was postponed.
Fiorentina fell behind to Hellas Verona on December 22 through Kevin Lasagna’s effort before the break, but half-time substitute Gaetano Castrovilli scored through a header with nine minutes remaining to rescue a point for the continental outsiders.
Vincenzo Italiano’s side took 11 points from a possible 15 in their final five Serie A matches of 2021 and head into the New Year sitting 7th in the table, level on points with sixth-placed Roma and just six behind Atalanta BC in fourth and final Champions League spot.
They are currently well-placed to challenge for a top-six place, starting with another encounter at the Stadio Artemio Franchi – which comes after their star striker Dusan Vlahovic hinted that he will remain at the club for the remainder of the season in order to spearhead their European charge.
Surrounded by another COVID-related confusion wave, Udinese’s final game of the calender year against Salernitana did not take place before the winter break, with the league’s basement side not traveling to the Dacia Arena after being banned from tavelling.
Such an absurd situatian led to Udinese rounding off 2021 with back-to-back 4-0 wins in the Coppa Italia and Serie A, firstly edging out Crotone 4-0 in the cup before netting four without response past Cagliari on December 18.
Udinese had previously gone five Serie A games without a victory before thrashing Cagliari, with the struggles for consistency seeing them sit 14th in the table ahead of this contest, wtih nine points clear of the bottom three with a game in hand.
