Monday’s fixture in the Turkish Super Lig sees one of the minor top-flight Istanbul derbies take place, with Fatih Karagumruk welcoming Istanbulspor to the Ataturk Olympic Stadium.
These two teams have made underwhelming starts to the 2022-23 campaign, with one win apiece so far, both occupying the bottom half of the Super Lig table.
In his first managerial role since his spell at Juventus, Andrea Pirlo’s time at Karagumruk got off to a poor start, losing his first two matches in charge, conceding four goal on both occasions.
However, despite those defeats to Alanyaspor and Besiktas, Fabio Borini inspired them to an impressive 4-1 victory over Ankaragucu in their next game, and they have remained unbeaten since.
That remains their only victory of the season so far though, as their last three games have all ended in draws, includng back-to-back goalless stalemates away from home against Sivasspor and Istanbul Basaksehir.
If Karagumruk are to find their scoring touch again, they will most probably look to left-back Caner Erkin to be the provider, as the veteran former Turkish international currently sits joint-top of the assist rankings in the division.
Istanbulspor also made a poor start in their first season back at the top-flight since 2005, losing three of the bounce to start the campaign, including a 4-0 defeat at home to Konyaspor.
However, Valon Ethemi’s free kick against Alanyaspor was enough to earn a 1-0 victory, but they needed some last-minute heroics from goalkeeper David Jensen in saving a penalty from Daniel Candeias to hold on for a win.
They followed up that triumph with two respectable draws away to Sivasspor and at home to Besiktas, coming from behind twice to pick up a point from the 16-time Turkish champions, with survival at the top flight most likely to be welcomed as a brilliant achievement.

Fatih Karagumruk news
Pirlo has an almost full-fit squad at his disposal to choose from on Monday, with only Efe Tatli missing on that front with a cruciate ligament injury.
Otabek Shukurov will serve a one-game suspension after his red card against Basaksehir. So, with on-loan Matteo Ricci making his first start since the opening day.
There are concerns over fitness of Istanbulspor key man Valon Ethemi, as he missed their draw with Besiktas and did not feature in a friendly against Galatasaray over the break.
Central defender Mehmet Yesil was substituted before half time against Besiktas and will miss roughly a month’s action with a hip injury.
Prediction and Odds
There has been very little to separate the two sides so far this season, and both have become tougher to beat following difficult starts.
Istanbulspor have been stronger away from home, but home advantage will be a factor for Karagumruk in this derby, so we expect the contest to end level.
