Everton will be desperate to bounce back to winning ways when they take on Newcastle United at Goodison Park on Thursday night with kickoff at 22:45.
Everton were left empty handed again in the Premier League as they fell to narrow 1-0 defeat to Wolves at home last Sunday, with Conor Coady sealing the deal for the Wanderers four minutes into the second-half.
The defeat was following the 5-0 thumping at Tottenham and the Toffees have now won just one Premier League match ever since defeating Arsenal 2-1 in December, picking up one draw while suffering nine defeats in the process.
As a result Everton are in danger of relegation to the Championship next season as they now sit 17th level on 22 points with the 18th-placed Watford. Meaning that Frank Lampard’s sides are only out of the relegation on goal difference while are only five points above the rock-bottom Norwich City.
However, the Toffee still have three-matches in hand on most of the sides around them and they will need to maximally utilize the in-hand games to salvage their campaign, starting with the Thursday’s encounter.
Meanwhile Newcastle United’s resurgent form in the Premier League was ended at Stamford Bridge against a determined Chelsea side, who continue to fire on despite the on-going off-field troubles. Newcastle did put up a good fight in the match but an 89th-minute goal from Kai Havertz saw their nine-match unbeaten run the Premier League brought to an end.
The Magpies will view the defeat a minor slip-up in their resurgent form and they will be looking to bounce back here as they aim to keep climbing up the Premier League table. They currently sit 14th on 31 points from 29 matches, 11 points from the relegation zone and four points outside the top-half.
Thus they will be looking up the table and will fancy their chances of coming away with all three points here, as they have had the edge against Everton recently having won in four of their last six Premier League meetings, including victories in each of their last three.
