Salernitana take their final away game against Empoli at Stadio Carlo Castellani on Saturday, with their escape from Serie A relegation just two games away from realization.
After the sides were both promoted just over a year ago, they have experienced contrasting fortunes, as Empoli started remarkably before slipping down the standings, while the visitors have won four of their last six to finally pull themselves out of the drop zone.
After a spirited effort against Scudetto hopefuls Inter Milan eventually ended in failure last weekend, Empoli remain 14th on 37 points, which will be enough to guarantee them a stay in Serie A.
Though they have won just once in their last 20 matches, they found themselves 2-0 ahead at San Siro, and at one stage looked set to cause a shock with profound implication for the title race, but finally fell to a 4-2 defeat.
Despite losing to Inter, Gli Azzurri have lost only seven of their 18 away matches in Serie A this season, and have actually fared worse at home than on the road.
On the verge of a fifth victory since their stunning revival started in mid-April, Salernitana were denied an important three points last weekend, as relegation rivals Cagliari fought back to equalise in the ninth minute of second-half stoppage time at Stadio Arechi.
Going unbeaten in six matches, a run of 14 points from a possible 18 has helped survival specialist Davide Nicola to guide his side to within touching distance of Serie A survival.
Having previously kept both Genoa and Torino up against odds, Nicola has recently pulled off victories over Sampdoria, Udinese and Fiorentina. As a result, I Granata supporters can dream of extending their stay in the top flight to a second season, after suffering more than two decades in the lower leagues.
