He began running long distances as a child. At 16, he met Patrick Sang, a Kenyan runner who became his longtime coach. Together they began training for international competitions and eventually established themselves as some of the best runners in their country.

He won his first world title at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris, France, winning the silver medal in the men’s 10,000 meters event behind Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia.

In 2004 he won another silver medal at the Olympics Games in Athens 2004, finishing behind Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia with a time of 27:30:52 minutes.
