Wigan will look to keep their direct-promotion place when they travel to Mornflake Stadium to take on Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday night with kickoff at 22:45.
Crewe were left empty-handed again in League one as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Sunderland at away last Saturday. They have now won just one of their last 12 League One matches, picking up a draw while suffering 10 defeats in the process.
As a result David Artell’s side looks to be on their way to the fourth tier next season as they sit at the foot of the table with eight points adrift of safety and will remain at the bottom of the league no matter what transpire on Tuesday night.
However, with steal around eight matches to the end of the season Crewe still have a chance of salving their season, but they need to turn their fortunes around as soon as possible.
Meanwhile Wigan failed to respond to their 6-7 defeat in penalties to Sutton United in the semifinals of the Football League Trophy, as they were held to 1-1 draw by MK Dons at away last Saturday. The result saw Wigan drop points in two of their last four League One matches, which allowed MK Dons to get close them and they now sit in second level on 73 points with the Dons.
However, Wigan still have three matches in hand on the Dons and have played two less than the league leaders Rotherham, who sit four points above Wigan.
Leam Richardson’s side will therefore head into the match looking to bounce back to winning ways as they look to put a gap between them and the third-placed MK Dons, while hoping to get closer to the top I the process.
They fancy their chances as they visit Crewe in a fine away form having won 11, drawn four and lost just two of their 17 on the road matches so far this season and will want to keep momentum going. Also they recently edged crew 2-0 in the reverse fixture.
